Almost all of the residents I meet tell me they think Newport Beach is the best place to live in the world. And we are talking about people who travel all over the world and have the means to live anywhere they might desire. Indeed, we are extremely fortunate to be able to live in this great place. And on top of it, we have the good fortune of living in Newport Beach when the city officially turns 100 years old in 2006.
Actually, we aren’t waiting until 2006 to start the celebration. The city’s birthday officially gets under way with the “Let’s Do Launch!” kickoff event at the Newport Dunes. With the Beach Boys as headline performers, it will be a day of fun, food, drinks, boat races and continuous family entertainment. It promises to be a memory-making event.
Celebrating Newport Beach’s birthday will next take the form of a Rose Bowl float entry in the world famous Rose Bowl Parade on Jan. 2. There will be opportunities for you and your family and friends to volunteer to help prepare the float for the world to see, so be looking for those announcements.
Numerous events are in the planning stages. There will be a 2006 summer event at Fashion Island, as well as a “Cut the Cake and Blow out the Candles!” event on the front lawn of City Hall in September 2006. The yearlong celebration will conclude on Oct. 8, 2006, with our “Pier to Pier Party,” featuring music, entertainment, fireworks and a Dory Fishermen fish fry. Events are scheduled for both the Balboa and Newport piers simultaneously. Les Brown and his Band of Renown will re-create the swing band dance days, this time in the Pavilion. “Pier to Pier” is guaranteed to provide fun for all ages.
Yes, we are fortunate to live in Newport Beach. It gives us so many reasons to celebrate the great city that it is. Be on the lookout for continuous messages and announcements about these and other events. I will be seeing you there!
