Celebrating a great city
As a citizen first and a newspaper publisher second, I have a lot to be thankful for in our wonderful community of Newport Beach. To be here to take part in the centennial celebration of our city is in itself a great honor.

A lot goes into making a city great during the course of 100 years. It takes people to step to the forefront to lead our local governments, concerned more with the long-term welfare of our city than with popular opinion. It takes a medical facility like Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian that offers world-class treatment and services, but on a community level. A great city has clean and safe neighborhoods and a strong educational system for our kids. It takes the beauty and charm that is offered in such things as the ferry, the Balboa Pavilion, the piers, an electric boat ride or a sunset sail on our wonderful bay, the crashing waves at The Wedge or a simple walk down one of our miles of beaches. A great city has fine dining that can be found in our many restaurants, world-class shopping at places like Fashion Island and Crystal Cove or the simple charm found on a stroll through places like Balboa Island or Corona del Mar.

Many people have been responsible for making Newport Beach great over the years, but many, many more have been responsible for keeping it great. And that is the important reminder as we move forward into our second 100 years.

To all of our residents of Newport Beach, let us be thankful for what we have today and may we be blessed with great foresight as we move forward.

Party on…and happy 100!
